What is Eyelet Fabric?

Eyelet fabric is easy to recognise: small holes, finished with stitching around each edge, arranged in flowers, scallops or neat rows. It has a fresh, light, slightly romantic look that returns to fashion every few seasons — and it is especially popular for warm-weather clothing.

How eyelet is made

Traditional eyelet (often called broderie anglaise) starts with a woven fabric, usually cotton. An embroidery machine stitches around a small area, the centre is cut or punched out, and the stitching keeps the hole neat. Because the holes are embroidered, this type of eyelet is stable and holds its shape well.

Knitted eyelet is made differently. The holes are formed directly in the knitting structure, so no cutting is needed. Knitted eyelets are often made with polyester and a little spandex, which gives them stretch, a soft drape and easy care.

Why customers love it

  • It looks light and airy — perfect for summer and resort collections.
  • It adds detail and texture without needing a print.
  • It reads as feminine and fresh, but can also look clean and modern in solid colours.

What to make with eyelet

Blouses, sundresses, skirts, children's dresses and summer tops are classic choices. Eyelet also works as a panel — a yoke, a sleeve or a hem border — on a garment made from plain fabric.

Lining and sewing tips

  • Because eyelet has holes, many garments need a lining or a slip underneath. Choose a lining in a matching or skin tone.
  • Place pattern pieces so the embroidery motifs are centred and balanced, especially on the front.
  • Woven eyelet has no stretch, so cut fitted styles with enough ease. Knitted eyelet with spandex can be cut closer to the body.
  • Press from the wrong side on a soft towel so the embroidery is not flattened.

Care

Wash gently and avoid wringing, which can pull the embroidery. Cotton eyelet may shrink a little the first time, so test a swatch before production.
