How to Choose Fabric for Summer Clothing in Thailand

Thailand is warm all year, and from March to May it is properly hot. For anyone producing clothing here, choosing fabric for the heat is not a seasonal decision — it is the main decision. A garment that looks beautiful on the hanger but traps heat will come back as a complaint, or simply never sell again.

What makes a fabric comfortable in hot weather

Three things matter most: how well air passes through the fabric, how well it handles sweat, and how much it clings to the body.

  • Breathability — open, loosely woven fabrics let air move. Hold the fabric up to the light: if you can see light through the weave, it will usually feel cooler.
  • Moisture handling — natural and cellulose fibres such as cotton, linen and viscose absorb moisture. Pure polyester does not absorb sweat, so it can feel sticky in humid weather.
  • Drape and weight — lighter fabrics that hang away from the body feel cooler than heavy fabrics that sit against the skin.

The best fibres for Thai summers

Cotton is the safe, reliable choice. It is soft, absorbs moisture and is easy to wash, which is why it remains the first choice for shirts, children's wear and everyday dresses.

Linen is the coolest of all. Its fibres are stiff and hollow, so the fabric stands slightly away from the skin and dries quickly. It wrinkles easily — many customers now see that as part of its relaxed charm. Linen–cotton blends soften the hand-feel and reduce creasing.

Viscose (rayon) is made from plant cellulose. It drapes beautifully, feels cool to the touch and takes print colours well, so it is a favourite for flowing dresses and blouses.

Practical tips before you order

  • Ask for a swatch and wear-test it: wash it once, then check the feel and any shrinkage.
  • Choose lighter colours and open prints for summer collections — they look and feel cooler.
  • Check the composition, not just the trade name. Some fabric names describe the look or feel rather than the fibre.
  • Match the fabric to the garment: crisp fabrics for shirts and trousers, soft drapey fabrics for dresses and blouses.

Where to start

If you are building a summer range, start with a breathable cotton print, a linen or linen–cotton for premium pieces, and a soft viscose print for dresses. Together they cover most hot-weather garments. Our team is happy to send swatches and talk through which fabric suits each style.
