Cotton and linen are the two natural fabrics our customers ask about most. Both are breathable and comfortable, both suit Thailand's climate, and both have a loyal following. But they behave very differently on the cutting table, on the body and in the wash. Here is a practical comparison for wholesale buyers.
Where they come from
Cotton comes from the soft fibres around the seeds of the cotton plant. Linen comes from the stem of the flax plant. Flax fibres are longer and stiffer, and that one difference explains most of what follows.
How they feel and look
- Cotton is soft from the first wear, smooth, and slightly stretchy in the weave. It looks neat and even.
- Linen feels crisper and slightly textured, with natural slubs (small thicker spots) in the yarn. It softens with every wash and has a relaxed, premium look.
Comfort in hot weather
Both breathe well, but linen is cooler. Its stiffer fibres hold the fabric away from the skin, it absorbs moisture quickly and dries faster than cotton. For resort wear and premium summer pieces, linen is hard to beat. Cotton is still very comfortable and is better for close-fitting garments and everyday basics.
Care and creasing
Linen creases easily — that is part of its character, but some customers dislike it. Cotton creases less and is easier to iron. Both can shrink if washed hot, so pre-washing or asking about shrinkage before cutting is always a good idea.
Cost and production
Linen is usually more expensive than cotton because flax takes more work to process. Cotton is easier to sew and more forgiving for new sewers. Linen frays more at cut edges, so finishing seams properly matters.
The middle ground: blends
Linen–cotton blends give you much of linen's look and coolness with cotton's softness and lower creasing. They are an excellent choice when you want a premium feel at a more accessible price.
Which should you choose?
- Choose cotton for shirts, children's wear, everyday dresses and printed basics.
- Choose linen for resort wear, wide-leg trousers, relaxed shirts and premium summer collections.
- Choose a linen–cotton blend when you want the linen look with easier care.
