Bangkok has been a centre of the fabric trade for generations. The Sampeng and Pahurat areas, along with the streets around Samphanthawong, are packed with fabric shops and wholesalers. For a new buyer it can feel overwhelming. A little preparation makes a big difference.
Know the difference between retail and wholesale
Many shops sell both by the yard and by the roll. Wholesale pricing usually applies to roll quantities, and the best prices go to buyers who order regularly. If you only need a few metres for samples, say so — many wholesalers will still help, but pricing will differ.
Prepare before you go
- Bring your design sketches or reference photos.
- Know roughly how much fabric you need and your target price.
- Bring swatches of fabrics you already like so sellers can match them.
- Note the garment type and how it will be washed.
Questions to ask every supplier
- What is the composition and the usable width?
- How many yards are in a roll, and can I buy less for sampling?
- Is this design available again if I reorder later?
- How consistent is the colour between batches?
- How long does a quotation take, and how do I confirm an order?
Check the fabric properly
Look at the fabric in daylight as well as under shop lights — colours can look very different. Unroll a section to check for flaws, uneven dye or print misalignment. Feel both sides, and ask for a small cutting if you want to test washing.
Use digital catalogues to save time
Walking the market is valuable, but it takes time. Many suppliers now offer online catalogues. Browsing designs before your visit means you arrive with a shortlist, and you can ask for quotes by message before you travel.
Build long-term relationships
In Bangkok's fabric trade, relationships matter. Regular buyers get better service, earlier news of new designs and more flexibility. Pay on time, communicate clearly and treat your supplier as a partner.
